Well, it looks like the first storm of the year is here, with numbers in the range of 3 to 6 inches. The important question to keep in mind is, can you sled on this? The answer is not sure. Closer to 6 inches, yes. Less than 4 inches? Well, well, I think not.
Why does this matter? Because we now have two new sledding hills open at Koulas. This past weekend, at the request of ConCom, the last remaining obstacle (a tree trunk) was removed, and there are no large rocks in the main run, so that part is ready.
This sledding setup has two areas at Koulas. First is the old silage pit. It is maybe a 15 foot drop with a gentle slope. This is good for the younger ones. This is to the right as you go past the sign and on the front side of the hill below “Big Red.”
The far side is much longer and steeper. So we now have two new sledding hills to add to the known ones at South Row, Varney, and Crooked Springs (Moccasin Road Hill).
The parking lot is known to be smaller than we hoped, as they reduced the size, but it can still hold about 10 to 15 cars, and they can increase it if demand is there.
Still no word on school or night class status tonight (I teach one in town tonight). But if it does snow a lot you can bet I will be over at Koulas to see how the new hills are working and how we can improve or make them safer.
A final reminder to sled safely, watch out for others on the hill, respect the neighbors, and enjoy the new spaces that Koulas has to offer.
