How a Trail Is Designed

Learning from the Koulas Farm Extension Project

Designing a walking trail looks simple when you see the final product, but the process behind it is careful, slow, thoughtful, and based on many years of experience. At Koulas Farm we are beginning work on a new trail extension that will eventually connect the existing loop to an access point near the paper road. The goal is to reduce the amount of Pine Hill Road walking people must do and to expand the main loop in a way that is safe and enjoyable.

This article walks through the method we use. It is the same method that created the current Koulas loop and many other trails in Chelmsford. Anyone can learn the basic steps, and understanding the process helps people appreciate why trails take time, why each step matters, and why it is always a team effort.


The team behind the work

The trail crew working on this extension is the same core group that designed and built the existing Koulas loop. Some members have more than twenty years of hands on trail design and maintenance experience in Chelmsford. Most of the others have between five and ten years of steady field experience. This depth of knowledge means the team already understands the land and its seasonal changes, and knows the best practices for building safe, long lasting walking trails.

It is important to know that this team takes the work seriously. They move forward in fixed steps, with verification and review built into every stage. No one person builds a trail. It is always a group effort where people bring different skills, different knowledge of the land, and different perspectives. The main Koulas loop was designed and built in only two months, and that was possible because of careful planning, experience, and teamwork.

To keep things organized for this project:

• John Ray will be the point person for the overall effort
• Phil Stanway will lead the design in the field
• Bill Vines will oversee work on site
• The Conservation Agent will verify environmental impacts
• The full Conservation Commission will give final approval before any clearing begins

This structure keeps the work moving in the right order and ensures environmental protection at every step.


Step 1

Start with maps

Good trail design begins long before anyone steps into the woods. The first step is to study the land on maps. We use aerial photos, topographic maps, wetland layers, old farm maps, conservation restriction maps, and property lines. These maps show slopes, wet areas, old roads, stone walls, and natural pinch points.

By studying the land on paper first, we avoid wasting time walking areas that will never work. For example, a wet low spot or steep drop might look passable in person, but the topo map will show right away that the slope is too steep or the area drains poorly. The more you understand before you walk, the better the final design will be.


Step 2

Sketch possible routes

Once the maps make sense, we sketch two or three possible trail lines. These are not final lines. They are simply ideas about how people might naturally move through the landscape. We look for gentle grades, old cart paths, open corridors, and places where the land already seems to suggest a walking route.

This step also includes thinking about how the new trail will connect to the larger system. A trail is not just a line in the woods. It is part of a whole network. It needs to feel natural, make sense to the walker, and work year round.


Step 3

Take it to the field

Now the real fun begins. With maps in hand and rough lines in mind, we walk the land. We use small pieces of removable tape to mark the possible routes. The tape helps us visualize the line, but it can be moved easily. Nothing is cut. Nothing is cleared. This stage is light, flexible, and quiet.

This is also when we begin to adjust the lines. A map might show one thing, but the ground can feel very different. A line that looks perfect on paper may pass too close to a wet area, have poor footing, or miss something interesting just a few steps away.


Step 4

Walk the route in both directions

When the temporary tape is up, we walk the entire route forward and then backward. Trails feel different depending on which direction you travel. Walking both ways helps reveal issues with visibility, slope, or natural flow. A route might feel great going in, but awkward or steep coming out. This is when we discover those things.

Any time something feels off, we move the tape. Adjustments are expected. This is the stage where the trail learns what it wants to be.


Step 5

Look for anchor points

Anchor points are the features that give a trail its character. They guide the final alignment and make the walk memorable.

At Koulas we already know two anchor points:

• The posted possible vernal pool, which sets a boundary we must respect
• The access point near the paper road, where an old farm road and old field appear to meet the woods

As we walk, more anchor points will appear. Old stone walls, large boulders, big old trees, narrow corridors, gentle rises, and other old farm features reveal themselves. These are the details that turn a simple path into a good walking experience.


Why we plan trails when the leaves are down

Trail design is easiest in late fall. With the leaves down, the ground is visible and the landscape is open. Old roads, field edges, drainage lines, and natural walking corridors stand out clearly. You can also see hazards that would be hidden in summer, such as dead trees, old barbed wire, or forgotten trash.

This is also when odd features of the land show themselves. A large rock, a bit of stone work, or an old farm object might catch the eye only when the woods are bare. Making a trail interesting means noticing these details and connecting people to them.

Years of experience help us read the land. After a while you can walk into the woods and begin seeing the story the land is telling. Old lines, forgotten uses, and natural pathways all become visible. The trail ends up fitting the land rather than forcing the land to fit the trail.


Step 6

Choose one preferred route

After walking, reviewing, adjusting, and studying anchor points, we narrow the choices to one preferred route. This route must:

• Have safe and stable footing
• Avoid steep or erosive slopes
• Stay outside sensitive wetlands
• Respect property boundaries
• Fit naturally with the full Koulas trail system
• Feel right to the people walking it

When all of those fit, we know we have a good candidate.


Step 7

Conservation Agent review

The Conservation Agent walks the proposed line to confirm that it avoids wetland impacts and stays a safe distance from the posted possible vernal pool. If any part of the route is too close to a sensitive area, the agent will ask for adjustments. This step protects the land and ensures legal compliance before anything is built.


Step 8

Landowner approval

Once the Conservation Agent is satisfied, the route is brought to the landowner for approval. At Koulas this means checking that the trail fits the long term plan for the property and supports public access without harm. No clearing or cutting happens until the landowner agrees to the route.


Step 9

Final field flagging

When everything is approved, the team returns to the field and marks the route with permanent flagging tape. This becomes the guide for volunteers and sawyers. Only after this step does formal trail building begin.


The result

If this process is followed carefully, the final trail will feel natural, safe, and interesting. It will highlight the land, respect sensitive areas, and connect people to the history and character of the property. That is always the goal.

Trail design is a craft that grows with experience. It takes patience, teamwork, and a willingness to adjust as the land reveals itself. When those pieces are in place, a good trail practically builds itself.
