New Eagle Project at Koulas “The Gathering Rocks”

Koulas Farm has become a magnet for Eagle Scout projects, with a bridge going in over the next few weeks, a proposed trail to follow once designed and approved, and an upgrade to the existing vernal pool trail in the works. Now an Eagle Scout candidate is taking a closer look at “Gathering Rocks,” a collection of considerable rocks arranged in unusual patterns at the junction of two trails.

The arrangement doesn’t look natural to me. Someone may have deliberately placed them there, or perhaps the area was used as a “rock dump.” With some work, it could become a gathering spot or outdoor classroom, both of which are needed at the site. Like most open space projects, you need to look past the dead trees and invasive brush to see the possibilities, but trust me, they are there.

The next step is to evaluate the site, develop a plan, and see whether ConCom will approve it before any building begins. The idea of a small outdoor classroom nestled in a grove of hardwoods is exciting, and so is a place to rest, “bathe in the forest,” or just sit and listen to the surrounding sounds.

That brings us to four Eagle Scout projects at one stage or another, from evaluation to installation. We will, of course, keep everyone updated.
