I have been watching posts from people who have received notices about National Grid removing trees. I saw an excellent response from our tree warden explaining the process and figured I would share the pertinent information so you understand what is happening and what to do if you feel a particular tree should stay.
According to DPW Director Christine Clancy, all the trees scheduled for the September 24 hearing were requested for removal by National Grid. National Grid says its certified arborists evaluated the trees and recommended removal because they are dead or decaying and pose a risk to nearby overhead infrastructure. Christine has requested photos and reports, but at the time of her response, she had only received the tree list and National Grid’s explanation. Trees on Mill Road, Byam Road, Robin Hill Road, and Parker Road also require Planning Board approval because those streets are designated scenic roads.
The hearing will remain scheduled for Thursday during the day, but you do not have to attend to have your concerns included. Written comments or objections can be sent to DPW or emailed to Christine at cclancy@chelmsfordma.gov, and she will read them into the minutes at the hearing.
If you object to a removal, make sure you identify the specific tree you want to keep. Christine explained that a formal objection requires the hearing to continue at an upcoming Select Board meeting. At the time of her response, she had already received one formal objection for a tree on Hall Road. If you have questions about a particular tree, she is also available to answer them ahead of the hearing.
This kind of response is what we should be getting. It is transparent, concise, and helpful. Well done, DPW.
