Through snow and wind, nine brave souls gathered in the parking lot at Koulas Farm as a winter storm rolled through. Armed not with swords, but with loppers, hand saws, and chainsaws, our band set forth into the fields on a quest to free the trees from choking bittersweet and prepare the infamous “Devil Tree” for its final chapter.
The storm did not deter us.
The cold did not weaken us.
A massive amount of work was completed. Major vines were cut, adjacent trees were windowed so they will not leaf out this spring, and the site was safely prepared for DPW to remove the dead tree. As a bonus, a recently fallen roadside tree was cleared and staged for burning.
Friends of Koulas Farm is about providing a service to the town while having fun doing it. This post reflects our joy and sense of humor as we care for the land. Stewardship matters. Community matters. And yes, sometimes it feels like a quest.
The quest was completed… and our band will gather again next Saturday at 9am.
