Community is people showing up for the greater good. It is helping one another. It is working toward a shared goal, even when there is no spotlight and no obligation.
COSS works with many groups, and sometimes that means working directly with residents. Sometimes it is about supporting a cause. Sometimes it is just about lending a hand. Today was one of those days.
We moved and split wood to help a resident, and some of that wood went to a senior who is running low and cannot afford to buy more. I would have done it anyway, even if no one asked. That is just what you do.
This is community. It is a key thread in the fabric of this town.
I met new people today. We froze. We laughed. We worked. We broke equipment. We fixed equipment. We stood in the sun and played in the snow. A solo fire pit and a heater made it surprisingly comfortable. The day started at minus eight degrees and climbed all the way to a balmy twenty-four. Almost New England shorts weather.
When we finally headed inside, there was fresh baked bread and amazing chili waiting. That moment alone was worth the cold.
These are the days you remember.
There is something special about working with a group, especially with people you did not know before that day. You build a bond. A real one. That bond is community.
