The Gathering Rocks is one of those little Koulas Farm mysteries that makes you stop and say, “Ok, someone did this on purpose.”
Right at the junction of several trails, there is a man-made circle of rocks. It is not a natural boulder ring, and it does not match the random scatter you see everywhere else on the property. Someone gathered and placed these stones into a rough circle, about 20 feet across, and then walked away without leaving a sign that says why.
We do not know when it was built or what the original intent was. But we do know what it can be now.
When the current trail system was being laid out, this feature mattered. It helped shape how this side of the loop was designed, because it is a natural candidate for a small “woodland pause point” if it is cleared and maintained.
With a little invasive removal, this could become a simple resting spot in the wooded part of the site.
A place to catch your breath.
A place to sit with some comfort.
A place to meet up, chat, and point at a map without standing in the middle of the trail.
The good news is this is not a major build. It is a cleanup. The circle is already there. If we focus on the invasives and open it up, it is probably a one- or two-day project for a small crew.
