This morning feels like a turning point at Koulas.
At 9:00 a.m., one of our John Deere lawnmowers rolls in, repaired, tuned up, and ready to get back to work. It is being loaned from COSS to the Friends of Koulas Farm to cut and care for the family-friendly areas under the Select Board and managed by Conservation. A simple thing on paper. A mower. A job to do.
But if I had written that a year ago, numerous people would have questioned it.
Today it just makes sense.
That alone tells you how much things have shifted.
It is not that views are changing. It is that we have had a lot of change all at once. Conservation, town management, and the Select Board all turned over in a short amount of time. When that much change happens, it creates space. Space to reset. Space to work together in new ways.
And people are leaning into it.
You can feel it.
There is an energy right now that I have not seen in years.
COSS has changed too. Moving to a 501(c)(3) and building a board with new voices is not changing what we do, but it is shaping how we do it. There is a renewed focus on community, on farms, on scouts, and on working with other groups instead of around them. We now have a Scout leader on the board, a Charter Organization Representative, and possibly our first farmer joining very soon.
That matters. Those voices matter.
The bonds between groups are getting stronger. Friends of Koulas was built side by side with COSS members and continues that way today. A lot of that tone has been shaped by people like John Ray, who brings decades of nonprofit experience and volunteer leadership, along with a strong sense of purpose.
His message has been simple.
Value Added and High Road.
Value added means if we are doing something, it should improve life for residents. Not personal. Not political. Just improving things, even if it is in a small way.
High Road means we work together. Volunteers are respected. Ideas are welcome. When someone shows up and says, “What if?” the answer should be, “How do we make that happen?” If there is a concern, bring a solution with it. Keep things positive. Make workdays something people want to come back to. And never forget to thank people.
That mindset is spreading.
Farmers are for profit, but they are part of the fabric of this town. Once farmland is gone, it does not come back. Supporting them helps keep that part of Chelmsford alive.
Scouting continues to be one of the strongest youth programs out there. Eagle Scout projects are not free labor. They are a gift from scouts and their families.
Our many garden clubs are out there making the town greener, brighter, and more welcoming. Churches and youth groups are looking for ways to help and should be given real opportunities to do it. Groups like the Chelmsford Women of Today bring energy and ideas that we should be connecting with.
At Roberts Field, people are asking how they can help and what comes next. At Heart Pond, there are major ADA improvements that will open things up to more residents. At Koulas and Sunny Meadow, we are seeing real progress with access, trails, and family-friendly spaces.
It is all connected.
And this summer, that will come to life in a big way. We have six concerts planned and a kids craft day, all free and open to the community. It is not just events on a calendar. It is a celebration of what happens when people come together, share space, and build something positive for everyone.
Even behind the scenes, local businesses are stepping up. This coming week they will be helping move the community toolshed and support its rededication at a church location so it stays accessible and continues to serve the community. That shed has supported work all over town for years. Keeping it going matters.
So yes, this morning it is just a mower arriving at Koulas.
But it is also more than that.
It is grass getting cut so families have a place to walk. It is trails staying open. Not only that, but it is one group helping another without a second thought. Furthermore, it is what happens when people decide to work together.
Not only that, but it is a signal.
A shared direction. Something people are ready to lean into together.
Now is a time for new growth all around us, and we are embracing that energy. As The Byrds said it best:
“To everything there is a season
And a time to every purpose, under heaven
A time to build up, a time to plant”
