Hemlock trees in town have been ravaged by disease, and they are still some of the most beautiful trees we have. The old, large stand we used to have at Wright is now almost entirely gone.
Hemlocks hold a special place in my heart. Even when they are struggling, they keep fighting to live, and they can use all the help we can give them.
There is a small stand just beyond the parking lot at Koulas Farm. The front side is completely covered with vines, but the sides and backs still show strong signs of life.
Operation “Save the Hemlocks” is precisely what it sounds like.
If you have time on the crew, head over to Koulas Farm and jump in on cutting the vines off the hemlocks. This is one of those quick, high-impact tasks that can make a real difference.
We may also do a pop-up on Monday because every day those vines stay on the trees matters. When vines are loaded with snow, the extra weight and stress can really work the tree over.
